New Turbulence Model in ADINA for CFD

ADINA for CFD is continuously being improved to handle accurately a wide range of practical turbulent flows. The Spalart-Allmaras (SA) turbulence model, a one-equation model that is used in aerodynamics applications, will be available in ADINA 8.4.

In this News we present the solution of a well-known problem for turbulence benchmarking, namely, the "wall mounted Glauert-Goldschmied body". The analysis model consists of a two-dimensional duct, partially obstructed by a hump, see figure below. We use the experimental data from the NASA Langley Research Center to compare against our numerical results. This problem has proven to be quite demanding, especially in the prediction of pressure recovery and separation behind the hump.

The schematic below depicts the computational domain. A total of 90,882 FCBI-C elements were employed in both simulations, using the SA and SST models. The Reynolds number based on the hump length is 9.36 x 105. The static pressure coefficient along the hump is plotted in the graphs, demonstrating an excellent agreement and a good prediction of the separation and reattachment behind the bump (dimensionless distance > 0.6). The pressure contours using the SA model are shown in the figure above.
