FSI Simulation of a Car Door Seal
The ADINA System is extensively used for complex fluid-structure interaction problems. One such application is the simulation of a car door seal. The seal is made up of a rubber material surrounding an air filled cavity, as shown in Figure 1 below. Symmetry conditions are applied at both ends of the model. When the seal model is compressed, air flows out through a small orifice. This provides the necessary energy dissipating characteristics of the seal.
The simulation of the seal deformation is a strongly coupled FSI problem where the rubber experiences large strains and contact, and the air cavity experiences a significant change in geometry as air is expelled through the orifices. This requires the use of a powerful Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) mesh updating formulation. The animation shows the stresses in the rubber, and the pressure and velocity of the air as the seal deforms. The deformed geometry and fluid velocity are shown in Figure 1. Figure 2 shows the load deflection curve of the seal at 3 different applied velocities. Note the significant effect of velocity on the results.

This solution, like others presented in our earlier News, illustrates the complex FSI problems that can be tackled in industry using ADINA.
